Recession, RIP

It''s official: the UK economy has emerged from recession. Not, it has to be said, leaping out of bed with the verve and glad confidence of a Mr Motivator; more of someone waking up with a serious hangover. Figures from the Office of National Statistics showed that the UK economy grew by 0.1 per cent in the last three months of 2009.

Still, any positive economic growth, even on such a minuscule level, is better than contraction. The UK was the last major economy to emerge from the economic sin bin; Germany, France, Japan and the USA all moved back into the positive earlier in 2009. This was the longest UK recession on record, having begun in the second quarter of 2008.

The question is, where do we go from here? Welcome though even a modest recovery is, attitudes will not change overnight. Some businesses have gone forever; the survivors are still retrenched, and will not be unbattening the hatches immediately.

There is work out there, though. The challenge is finding it. And that's where a little investment now could pay dividends especially if your rivals are still hibernating. Updating your website, indulging in some cost-effective marketing and promotion, raising your corporate profile and getting your business noticed: all of these can not only help right away, they will stand you in good stead for when the recovery really starts to flow.
